Print vs. Poster: What the Terms Tell You About Wall Art

Print vs. Poster: What the Terms Tell You About Wall Art

A poster is a type of print. Neither word, by itself, tells you the image quality, paper weight, ink system, coating, durability, or value of the finished display.

A poster is a type of print. Neither word, by itself, tells you the image quality, paper weight, ink system, coating, durability, or value of the finished display.

Ask what the product actually is

A useful listing identifies the support material, dimensions, finish, and mounting or framing requirements. “Premium print” is a marketing description unless it is accompanied by specifications that help you compare the product.

Paper is not a single quality level

Paper prints can use different weights, textures, coatings, and printing processes. A thin promotional poster and a carefully produced art print need not have the same construction. Do not infer ink type or lifespan from the word “poster.”

Rigid materials change the presentation

Acrylic adds a clear glossy surface, metal gives a thin rigid panel, and stretched canvas adds woven texture and an edge. STG lists 3mm acrylic, 1mm gloss aluminum, and ¾-inch stretched gloss canvas options across its wall-art catalog. Check the selected design’s available sizes and mounting information.

What about giclée and archival claims?

Ask which printing process, ink, support, and testing a seller means. A label alone does not establish how the complete print will perform. Missing ink information is a reason to ask, not evidence that a particular ink was used.

Compare the finished display

Include the frame or mounting equipment you want, shipping, and the space the artwork occupies. Examine the crop and intended viewing distance. A good source image and suitable production process matter in every format.

Choose what you want to live with

Paper can suit a framed collection; acrylic, metal, and canvas can give a different physical presence. None is a universal upgrade for every room. Choose by the artwork, finish, budget, and care requirements rather than the category name.
